No sunlight has ever reached this far. In permanent darkness, near-freezing cold, and crushing pressure, life does not merely survive — it makes its own light.
Below two hundred metres the last blue glimmer dies. Past one thousand, the ocean turns to absolute black — a column of water taller than most mountains, colder than a refrigerator, pressed under a hundred times the weight of the air you breathe. This is the bathypelagic, the midnight zone, and it is the largest living space on Earth. Roughly nine in ten of its inhabitants glow. They flash to lure prey, to find a mate, to vanish in a burst of false light. Down here, illumination is not a luxury. It is a language.

When attacked it spins a pinwheel of blue light — a "burglar alarm" that summons bigger predators to eat its attacker.
Mostly mouth. Its jaw unhinges to swallow prey larger than itself, and its whip of a tail ends in a pink-glowing tip.
Neither squid nor octopus. Cloaks itself in a webbed cape and, when threatened, ejects a cloud of glowing mucus instead of ink.
